Not sure whether fascinating or depressing but wouldn't it be surprising to discover that our seemingly analogous physical and psychological realities are based entirely on a binary framework? Yes, duality it is, embedded in- from the tiniest possible existence of things to the enormousness of this whole universe. Like the pairs, Dynamic-Static, Male-Female, Heat-Chill etc. it's all about the presence of complementary opposite properties in everything which cannot exist without one another. Yin and Yang are the names in Chinese philosophy to represent this dual nature, where Yin represents female, passive, negative principles in nature and Yang represents positive, active, male principles in nature:
With the popularity of Martial art movies and animes these two names are well spread among a good portion of readers. Though evident, nothing is absolute about determining Yin or Yang of anything. E.g. if we consider Heat to be Yang, two different degrees of hotness can be further considered as Yin and Yang of Heat, with the new Yin being a lesser temperature than the other. This ramification can go on forever. In the book I Ching all phenomena are said to be reduced to Yin-Yang. But it seems only the infinite possibility of subdivisions that lays within the deterministic and certainly binary framework of things gives us the sense of analogue in our reality.
According to ancient esoteric teachings, from the great unity of nothingness arose Consciousness and simultaneously this primordial phenomenon to sustain grew its counterpart Vibration. This very prime Yin and Yang pair contributed to the formation of Cosmic Egg(Bramhanda in Indian philosophy). With the combination of these Two, Four preliminary phases of existence were formed. At this stage came the ideas of 'Yin within Yang' and 'Yang within Yin' which represent Dominance. Adding a 3rd extra quality to each Four, Eight fundamental entities of energy were obtained. This formation of Eight entities with the help of Three qualities is referred to as Eight Trigrams or Bagua.
Binary development of Eight Trigrams:
Now how does this relate to physical world? In the quantum level of understanding there are basic 3 physical attributes to particles.
The strong nuclear interaction relates to a colour charge in quarks.
The electromagnetic interaction is related to the electrical charge and spin of particles and
Gravitational interaction to the mass of the particles.
Moreover, the formation of Protons and Neutrons that defines any atom follows the Eight Trigrams principle thoroughly:
There are Four possible phases of existence seen in physical matters also, namely Solid(utmost Yin), Liquid(Yang within Yin), Gaseous(Yin within Yang) and Plasma(utmost Yang).
The Eight entities are also notions of eight directions(Also adopted in Feng Shui).
In Tao cosmology a Pre-heaven arrangement of the 8 entities gives birth to 5 metaphysical elements(included in Ayurveda) while a Later-heaven arrangement contributes to the physical 5 elements.
Tao(Chinese) Cosmology:
A very well fit scientific correspondence to this cosmology can be String Theory! The pattern in which Strings interact with this physical world is Tri-axial. This interaction forms the physicality of particles. There have been Five types of String theories to explain the quantum and physical phenomena of this world. Scientists like 'Stephen Hawking' worked on combining those 5 into the M-Theory, which is the best possible present day version of 'The theory of everything'. Surprisingly, this supercombination can only be achieved with Duality hypothesis of the strings.
Combining the String theories:
Though not exactly equal, these Chinese scriptures are not so different from the Indian cosmological scripts where with a combination of 3 qualities(Sattva, Raja, Tama) first 5 senses(Pancha tanmatra) then 5 physical elements(Pancha mahavut) were created.
Vedantik(Indian) Cosmology:
As per the theological understanding of the Indian scripts,
Sattva= Force of Balance
Raja= Force of Activation
Tama= Force of Conserve
So we can derive that, Tama corresponds to the nature of Yin, Raja to the nature of Yang and Sattva to the balance between the two. For an in-depth relative study between Chinese and Indian approaches towards this Energy Theory I will recommend reading this book- From Ayurveda to Chinese medicine.
It is notable that further from a combination of the 8 basic entities(Trigrams), an array of 64 Hexagrams is formed symbolizing all possible phenomena of the Universe.
While conceiving the theory of duality we must consider that duality only exists to sustain a morph of unity by means of dynamic balance between the two:
Simply like in physics, Wavelength and Frequency coexist in the system to give physical significance to the wave and a product of the two equates to 1. Same way, the coexistence of Soul and Body gives shape to the unity called life. This dynamicity in balance has been the very basis of existence all along, because ultimate balance leads to stasis and thus annihilation.
We can, disapprove of everything about this core wisdom and still live a meaningful life, but we cannot avoid the nature of duality in our Philosophy that drives our actions. In universe and in life everything is about duality, which is also reflected in the words of great Albert Einstein, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
